What a residential move with Cactus covers

A residential move is the whole contents of a home, packed or unpacked, carried out of one address and set down in another. Cactus sends a crew of two, three or four movers with a 16 or 26 foot truck, and the crew size is picked from what the estimate finds rather than from what you guess on the phone.

The crew arrives with the protection already on the truck: blankets for furniture, runners for floors, shrink wrap for upholstery, straps and dollies for the heavy pieces. Anything that has to come apart to fit through a door is taken apart and put back together at the other end.

  • Houses, townhouses, condos and rentals, furnished or half packed
  • Disassembly and reassembly of beds, tables and modular furniture
  • Blankets, shrink wrap, floor runners and door protection on every job
  • Appliances, safes and pianos handled by the same crew where access allows
  • Long distance and cross border legs booked through the same coordinator

Where we run residential moves

Pick your city. Local rates, truck availability and the crews themselves are branch by branch, so the city page is the one that can answer a date question today.

Call us or get a quote online. Either works.

How residential moving is priced

Local residential moves are hourly. The rate follows the crew and the truck, the clock starts when the crew starts work at your door, and there is a two hour minimum. On top of the hours there is one operations fee for the coordination the office does around the job, and that is the whole invoice: no fuel surcharge, no mileage, and no travel time charge within city limits.

Long distance and cross border moves are quoted differently, because the driving is most of the work. Those are priced as a job rather than by the hour and the number comes back after somebody has been through the inventory with you. Eligible customers can split either kind of bill with Affirm or Klarna.

What a house move costs in your city

Every branch publishes its own rate card and a worked example of what a one, two or three bedroom home usually runs to.

Mississauga has 7 local moves on record, and this table publishes a price at 30 or more, so that row carries its count and no figures. A spread taken from that many jobs would look like a measurement and read like a guess. What is firm at any sample size is the hourly rate card, and every city page below publishes it.

Totals are what Cactus invoiced, in Canadian dollars with tax in, for moves whose pickup and at least one drop-off were both inside the city. Medians and quartiles, never averages, winsorised at the 5th and 95th percentile so one unusual job cannot move a band. Storage and packing materials are billed on their own agreements and are outside these totals. Measured August 30, 2026.

Residential moving questions

The six questions the office is asked most about a whole home move.

How many movers do I need for a house move?

Two movers and a 16 foot truck handle most one bedroom homes. Two or three bedrooms usually take three movers and a 26 foot truck, and a full house with a basement often takes four. The estimate picks the crew, because a crew that is one person short costs more in hours than the extra person would have cost.

Do I have to empty my dressers and wardrobes?

Clothing can stay in a dresser if the drawers are light and the dresser is sound. Anything with glass, liquid or loose paper in it comes out first. Wardrobe boxes are the usual answer for hanging clothes and the crew can bring them on the day.

How far ahead should I book a residential move?

Two to three weeks is comfortable for a weekday. The last weekend of the month and the first of the next are the busiest slots in every one of our cities, so those want more notice. A short notice move is still worth a call: cancellations open up.

Is there a deposit?

No deposit for a local move. You confirm the date, the office sends the written estimate, and payment happens once the work is done. Long distance bookings are arranged with the coordinator who quotes them.

What will the crew not move?

Propane tanks, fuel, paint, aerosols, ammunition and anything else flammable or pressurised stay with you. So do cash and jewellery, along with the documents you would not want out of your sight. Plants and pets travel in your own car.

Can Cactus pack the house as well as move it?

Yes. Packers are booked by the hour and can do the whole house or the parts nobody wants to face, usually the kitchen and the garage. Packing normally happens the day before the truck comes so loading starts on time.

Tell us about the home and we will price it

Send the address, the date and roughly what is in the house. You get a written estimate, no deposit for a local move, and no travel time charge within city limits.
