What Can I Do to Prepare For My Move in Winter?

Clear Access for the Movers

  • Shovel driveways, walkways, and porch steps before the crew arrives. Clear snowbanks or drifts near the curb so the truck can get close.
  • Apply salt or sand to reduce slipping hazards.
  • Remove ice buildup at entrances and parking areas.
  • Ensure gates, side yards, and backyard paths are accessible.
  • For apartments/condos, confirm before movers arrive that the loading area isn’t blocked by parked cars.

Preparing Parking & Truck Access

  • A 26 ft (5-ton) truck needs roughly 40 ft of space to park safely. +15 ft for the ramp.
  • A 16 ft moving truck needs about 25–28 ft of clear space to park safely. +10 ft for the ramp.
  • Let us know if access is tight before the moving day. We may adjust equipment or parking strategy.

Outdoor Furniture & Equipment

  • Disconnect propane tanks (we do not transport them).
  • Drain water from fountains, hoses, and planters to prevent leaks.
  • Brush off snow from furniture cushions, frames, and covers.

Weather-Sensitive & Fragile Items

  • Keep plants, candles, liquids, and delicate items in a warm spot.
  • Avoid leaving boxes with liquids (cleaners, cosmetics, oils) in the cold for long periods.
  • Tell your crew about any temperature-sensitive belongings.

Preparing Inside Your Home

  • Pack everything before movers arrive unless packing service is booked.
  • Label boxes clearly - this helps movers stay efficient in cold weather. Indicate boxes with fragile items.
  • Keep hallways, stairs, and doorways free of clutter.
  • Set aside the essentials you’ll need during the day, and place any items (leftover items from previous owners) that should stay behind in a clearly marked spot so the crew knows not to move them.
  • Make sure pets are in a separate room to avoid cold exposure and door traffic.
