Movers in Elmwood: what we know about moving here

Most homes in Elmwood are single-detached and the rest are largely row houses, with nothing standing five storeys or more. Yet more than a third of its households rent rather than own, which is a substantial rental share for a neighbourhood of houses, and it means moving dates here divide between possession days and lease ends rather than falling all in one place. The households are full ones on the whole, so a good share of the work is a whole home rather than a single load.

What follows is drawn from the neighbouring southwest Edmonton communities Elmwood belongs to, and it sets out how long that work runs and what it comes to.

Moving costs around Elmwood, by the numbers

That set runs to 57 communities and 217 completed residential moves. Sixty-nine per cent of them were graded small and only 5% large; the middle job took 4.75 hours on site, with half landing between 2.5 and 7.5 hours, and cost $869 with tax at the median, half of them between $477 and $1,493. Garneau accounts for 21 of those moves, Haddow and Terwillegar South for 11 apiece.

How much does it cost to move in Elmwood?

$869 is the median total with tax across the 217 residential moves in the southwest Edmonton communities around Elmwood, with half of them falling between $477 and $1,493. Two things set the hourly rate: how many movers turn up and which truck they arrive in. Both are named in the agreement before the work begins.

  • Does renting rather than owning change how a move in Elmwood is booked?

36% of Elmwood's households rent, so a fair share of dates here are lease ends rather than possession days, which usually means the date is fixed further ahead and by somebody else. The job itself is billed the same way either way: an hourly rate set by the crew and the truck, with no deposit on a local move. What changes is who else has to agree to the date.

  • Why do Elmwood moves vary so much in length?

Because the middle half of those 217 moves ran anywhere from 2.5 to 7.5 hours on site around a 4.75-hour median. 69% of them graded small and 5% large, and the same hourly rate applies across that whole spread, so what varies is the size of the home and the distance between its door and the truck, not the rate.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Elmwood?

A permit is only needed where the truck has to occupy the street itself, and 6 working days is the notice Edmonton asks for on a low-impact request like a household move, 10 on a high-impact one. The permit is the On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit, and no fee is attached to it at present for this class of work. Processing lengthens through the peak construction season, so the week before is the time to ask.

Elmwood neighbourhood guide for moving day

Two lines on this panel decide the shape of the day. The housing is the first: a neighbourhood of houses and row houses with nothing at five storeys or more, so a move usually loads from a driveway or a shared frontage rather than a lobby, and there is no tower lift to hold. The curb is the second. Edmonton covers a vehicle occupying the street with an On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit, it carries no fee at present, and a household move sits in the low-impact category, which is asked to be filed at least 6 working days ahead, a call to make the week before rather than the morning of.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.

This was such an efficient group. They were friendly and clarified exactly what needed to be done. Even when we said not to worry about shoes and floors they still laid out mats to protect the floor. I highly recommend and the mini cactus gift at the end was a cute touch.
