Movers in Riverdale: what we know about moving here

Riverdale is a neighbourhood of small households in a mixed housing stock. Over a third of its homes hold a single person, and what is behind that figure is split fairly evenly between detached houses and low-rise apartment buildings rather than led by one type. The load on a given job is usually a modest one, and the open question is which kind of front door it comes out of.

Almost none of it is tall. With 2% of homes in a building of five storeys or more, a move here is far more often a driveway and a staircase than a lobby, a booked lift and a shared loading bay; where a low-rise building is involved, the flights between the suite door and the truck are the part of the day worth planning around. Owners outnumber renters, which tends to tie a date to a possession day fixed months in advance rather than to the end of a lease.

The figures below are drawn from the ring of northeast Edmonton communities Riverdale sits inside, which is the closest measure held of what a job in this part of the city takes.

Moving costs around Riverdale, by the numbers

That ring is 33 northeast Edmonton communities holding 167 completed residential moves between them, with Downtown carrying 75 of the count on its own and Belvedere, Parkdale, Clareview Town Centre, Delwood and McCauley among the rest. Three-quarters of the work graded small, the middle job ran 4 hours on site, and the median came to $751 with tax in, with half of it landing between $499 and $1,175. It is a pooled figure covering every size of home in the ring, so read the spread rather than the midpoint.

How much does it cost to move in Riverdale?

The median residential move across the northeast Edmonton communities around Riverdale is $751, total cost with tax, and half of those 167 jobs fell between $499 and $1,175. Rates are hourly, set by the number of movers and the size of the truck the job needs, and the agreement states the rate before the crew starts.

  • What does it cost to move out of an apartment in Riverdale?

An apartment move in Riverdale is billed from the same hourly rate as a house move, and it usually costs less, because a smaller load is fewer hours. Around a third of the homes here are apartments in low-rise buildings, so the day tends to be flights of stairs rather than a booked service lift. With 2% of homes in a tall building, the thing worth sorting in advance is where the truck can stand, not the elevator.

  • How long does a local move in Riverdale take?

The middle job across the 167 moves in the northeast Edmonton communities around Riverdale ran 4 hours on site, and half of them took between 2.75 and 5.5 hours. Three-quarters of that work was graded small. Because the rate is hourly, the hours are what the total is made of, and the size of the load and the number of flights between it and the truck do most of the deciding.

  • Why do moving quotes in Riverdale vary so much?

Because one median has to cover every size of home: half of the 167 nearby moves came in between $499 and $1,175, and that band holds a one-person apartment load and a full detached house at the same hourly rate. What separates them is hours, not the price per hour: the volume that has to come out, the flights it comes down, and the distance from the door to the truck.

  • Do you charge for travel time to Riverdale?

No. Travel time within city limits is not charged, so a Riverdale move is billed for the hours the crew is actually working. There is no deposit on a local move either, and no fuel surcharge; the rate in the agreement is the whole of it.

Riverdale neighbourhood guide for moving day

Two things decide a Riverdale moving day, and neither is a lift. The first is stairs: with the housing split between detached homes and low-rise buildings, the carry is vertical more often than it is long, and a walk-up suite adds flights rather than corridor. The second is the roadway. Edmonton covers a truck occupying it with an On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit, currently issued without a fee, but the City wants a minimum of 6 working days notice for low-impact work and 10 for anything heavier, and processing slows through construction season.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.

I Have used them on 2 occasions to help move a family member out their house. 1st move house to storage that was a long move which is normal 8 hours with 2 movers not bad at all. 2nd move storage into the appartment ( Ivan and George load the truck under 1hr) . the move was done under 6 hours.

Overall I had a great experience with my move. The quote was fast and all my questions were answered right away. I was a little surprised that the movers showed up in a U-Haul truck, but George and Nikita were efficient, respectful and professional.
