Movers in Newton: what we know about moving here

Newton is a house neighbourhood, three-quarters of it owner-occupied, and there is very little else in the mix: no towers, a small apartment fringe, and a middle home dating from the 1961 to 1980 band. Housing that settled turns over on possession days far more often than on lease ends, which usually means a date fixed with a lawyer rather than a building manager, and a load that is a whole household rather than a single room.

The other consequence is physical. The job starts at a private front door on a residential street, so what decides the length of the day is how close the truck can stand and how many steps sit between it and the door. The hours and prices below come from the wider northeast Edmonton set Newton belongs to.

Moving costs around Newton, by the numbers

Thirty northeast Edmonton communities make up that set, Belvedere, Parkdale and Clareview Town Centre among them, and 84 residential moves have been completed across it. The median was $677 with tax in and 3.88 hours on site, with the middle half of jobs running 2.19 to 5.31 hours and costing between $439 and $1,083. Three in four were graded small and 20% medium. Eighty-four moves is a modest sample, so read it as a range rather than a quote.

How much does it cost to move in Newton?

The median local move across the northeast Edmonton communities around Newton costs $677, total cost with tax, and half of those 84 jobs fell between $439 and $1,083. Rates on a local move are hourly, set by the number of movers and the size of the truck, and the agreement states the rate before the crew starts.

  • How long does a move in Newton take?

The middle job across those 84 northeast Edmonton moves ran 3.88 hours on site, with half of them finishing between 2.19 and 5.31 hours. A whole-house load runs toward the longer part of that, because at a fixed hourly rate the extra rooms show up as extra time rather than a different price.

  • How many movers and how big a truck will a Newton move need?

That is the question the rate is built on: a local move is priced by the number of movers and the size of the truck, both settled in the agreement before the crew starts. Across the 84 moves in the surrounding northeast communities, 75% graded small and 20% medium, and the middle job took 3.88 hours on site, which is a useful sense of scale for a detached house emptied in a day.

  • Why do moving quotes in Newton vary so much?

Because the bill is hours multiplied by a rate, and the hours are decided by the house rather than by the neighbourhood. Across the 84 northeast Edmonton moves around Newton the middle half spanned $439 to $1,083, one band covering a light single-room load and a full household at the same hourly rate.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Newton?

Only where the truck has to occupy the roadway rather than a driveway. Edmonton covers that with an On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit, which currently carries no fee; low-impact work such as a residential move is asked to file a minimum of 6 working days ahead and heavier jobs 10, with roughly 6 business days of processing.

Newton neighbourhood guide for moving day

Two things about Newton shape the day rather than the price. It is low-rise, owner-occupied housing throughout, so there is no building management to clear the date with, no service lift to reserve and no loading bay to book: the whole job is a door, a walk and a truck. That makes where the truck stands the open question. Edmonton's On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit covers a vehicle occupying the roadway, and it counts its notice in working days rather than hours, so a block that leaves no off-street option is a request to file the week before.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.
