Movers in Alberta Avenue: what we know about moving here

Alberta Avenue's housing mostly went up by 1960, and it is mostly single-detached, majority owner-occupied, with nothing in the community standing five storeys or higher. Alongside those houses sit low-rise apartments and duplex apartments, and better than a third of all homes here hold a single person. A crew arriving at an Alberta Avenue address may therefore be doing a whole house or one person's worth of belongings out of a walk-up.

For a moving day that means stairs rather than a lift at either end of the size range, and a mixed calendar: possession dates for the owned majority, lease endings for the rest. The figures underneath are drawn from the ring of northeast Edmonton communities around Alberta Avenue.

Moving costs around Alberta Avenue, by the numbers

That ring is 28 northeast Edmonton communities carrying 85 completed moves between them, Belvedere, Parkdale and Clareview Town Centre included. Its middle job took 3.75 hours on site and came to $665 with tax, and half of the work fell between $426 and $1,111. Small jobs are 77% of it and medium 20%; a size backed by fewer than five moves is not published, so the two shares stop short of the whole. Eighty-five moves is a modest pool, which makes it a range to plan against rather than a quote.

  • How long does a local move around Alberta Avenue take?

The median is 3.75 hours on site across 85 residential moves in the surrounding northeast Edmonton communities, with half of them running between 2 and 5.75 hours. 77% of those jobs graded small.

  • Does a house cost more to move than an apartment in Alberta Avenue?

Usually, because a local move is billed by the hour and a house is more hours: more rooms, a basement or a garage, and stairs at both ends. Alberta Avenue is mostly single-detached houses, with low-rise apartments and duplex apartments making up most of the rest and nothing in the community above four storeys. The hourly rate is identical either way, and what differs is how many movers the home needs and how long they are there.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Alberta Avenue?

Only if the truck needs to occupy road space, and then Edmonton's On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit covers it; no fee currently attaches to one. The lead time is what matters: a residential move counts as low-impact and should be filed at least 6 working days ahead, where high-impact work wants 10, and processing runs longer through peak construction season. On the bill itself there is no deposit on a local move, no fuel surcharge, and no charge for travel time within city limits.

Alberta Avenue neighbourhood guide for moving day

The mix is what to plan around. Alberta Avenue is mostly houses, so most jobs here are a front door, a staircase and a driveway; the rest are low-rise apartments and duplex apartments, and nothing in the community is a tower, which in practice means stairs rather than a guaranteed lift. Say which of the two you are when you book, because it changes the crew more than the volume does. For the truck, Edmonton uses an On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit for street occupancy, no fee currently attaches to it, and a residential move counts as low-impact work: 6 working days of lead, where high-impact work wants 10.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.
