Movers in Highlands: what we know about moving here

Highlands is a settled house neighbourhood in northeast Edmonton: mostly detached homes, mostly owner-occupied, and mostly built in 1960 or before. That combination decides two things about a move here. Dates follow possessions rather than lease ends, so they are usually known well in advance; and the work is front-door work, with an interior stair run and a walk to the street rather than a lift and a booked bay.

The household figures cut the other way, though. This is a neighbourhood of small households, and a detached house does not always hold a detached-house load. That is worth saying out loud when you ask for a quote, because it is the load and not the address that the hours follow. What those hours cost is measured below, across the northeast Edmonton communities around Highlands.

Moving costs around Highlands, by the numbers

That set is 28 northeast Edmonton communities with 82 residential moves between them, Belvedere and Parkdale contributing the most of that count. The middle job ran 3.88 hours on site, half of them between 2.25 and 5.44 hours, and cost $671 with tax counted, with half landing between $436 and $1,088. Seventy-seven per cent were graded small and 20% medium. It is a modest record, better read as a band than as a quote.

How much does it cost to move in Highlands?

$671 is the median local move across the 82 residential jobs recorded in the northeast Edmonton communities around Highlands, total cost with tax, with half of them between $436 and $1,088. A local move is billed hourly on a rate set by the number of movers and the size of the truck, and the agreement states it before the crew starts.

  • How long does a move in Highlands take?

The middle job across those 82 northeast Edmonton moves ran 3.88 hours on site, and half of them took between 2.25 and 5.44 hours. Because the rate is hourly, those hours are effectively the price. What fills them is the volume coming out, the stair run behind the front door and how far the truck can park from it.

  • Do I need to book an elevator for a move in Highlands?

No home in Highlands is in a building of five storeys or more, so there is no tower lift to reserve and no loading bay to share; this is front-door and interior-stair work. Where a low-rise building is involved, the entry and where the truck may wait are still worth a call to the building before the date.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Highlands?

Only if the truck has to stand on the roadway, and Edmonton covers that with an On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit. It carries no fee at present; the City asks for a minimum of 6 working days' notice on low-impact work and 10 on high-impact, and processing slows during peak construction season, so file it the week before rather than the morning of.

  • Are there any hidden fees on a local move?

None. The hourly rate is set by the number of movers and the size of the truck, it is written into the agreement before the crew starts, and nothing is added afterwards: no deposit on a local move, no fuel surcharge and no charge for travel time within city limits. Packing services and bin rentals are quoted separately.

Highlands neighbourhood guide for moving day

Two lines on this panel decide how a Highlands day is planned. The housing is low and detached: no home here is in a building of five storeys or more, so there is no tower lift to reserve and no loading bay to share, and the interior stairs of an older house are what take the time. The other is the curb. A truck standing on the roadway is covered by Edmonton's On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit, filed at least 6 working days ahead for low-impact work and 10 for high-impact, and slower to come back through peak construction season.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.

They did a move 1 month ago. I just realized that I have left a review. I even took a shot with the packing that they did. I was impressed because I didn't even tell them how important my furniture for me!!! So I guess they just have a policy on how to do the jobs step by step.
