Movers in Downtown: what we know about moving here

Downtown is a vertical neighbourhood, and that one fact decides more about a move here than anything else on the page. The homes are apartments and very little else, most of them are rented, and most households are a single person. A job starts at a lobby rather than a driveway, the date follows a lease or a turnover rather than a closing, and the elevator window belongs to the building rather than to you.

The work matches the housing. 81% of the moves completed inside the Downtown boundary graded small and 16% medium, a crew of 2 covered the middle of them, and the median day ran 4.25 hours on site. Over 70 moves have been attributed here since 2024, 49 of them in the last twelve months, so these are figures from work being done now rather than from a back catalogue.

Not every job fits a bedroom count either: of the 75 residential moves behind those hours, 23 were storage runs, container loads and part-home jobs, which is why the cards below cut the work into three sizes rather than covering every booking on the page.

Downtown neighbourhood guide for moving day

One line on this panel decides the day. Most homes here sit in a building of five storeys or more, so a Downtown job normally begins and ends at a lobby: the elevator booking and the loading bay slot are what to arrange with building management well before the date, and they are the two things a crew cannot arrange for you. The curb barely applies in a neighbourhood with no houses in it, but it is worth naming. If the truck has to occupy the roadway, Edmonton's On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit is the instrument, it carries no fee at present, and turnaround lengthens through the peak construction season.

Downtown moving costs, by the numbers

Every figure in that band comes from residential jobs where either the pickup or the delivery address fell inside the Downtown boundary, counted from 2024 onward. The all-time count is a floor rather than a total; the 49-move figure for the last twelve months is an exact tally. The cost median rests on 62 of those moves rather than all 75, since it takes only the jobs invoiced as local residential work, tax included. That is why the hours and the money on this page are counted over slightly different sets.

What a move in Downtown actually looks like

Four sizes of move, cut out of 75 completed residential jobs in Downtown. Another 23 were storage runs, container loads and part-home jobs whose paperwork records no bedroom count; they belong to none of the four.

  • 2 movers · 1 truck the crew and trucks actually dispatched, median

Two movers and one truck handle a one-bedroom in Downtown, and the median job finishes in 4.25 hours on site. This is 48% of the work we have completed here: 36 moves, with half of them running 3 to 5.25 hours and costing $616 to $977. The load is a bedroom, a living space and a kitchen's worth of boxes; what decides where a job lands in that band is the lift, the distance from the lobby to the truck, and whether both are free when the crew arrives.

A two-bedroom is still a two-mover, one-truck job, and the median stretches to 5.5 hours. This is the widest spread on the page: half of the 13 completed here ran 4.25 to 9 hours and cost $668 to $1,986. Thirteen moves is a thin base for a spread that large, and this size is 17% of Downtown's work. A walkthrough before the date is what separates a job near the bottom of that band from one near the top.

  • 6.5 hours on site half ran 5.75–9.25 hours
  • 3 movers · 1 truck the crew and trucks actually dispatched, median

A three-bedroom house move is a different kind of day: 3 movers, one truck and a median of 6.5 hours on site, with half of the 17 northwest Edmonton jobs behind the card running 5.75 to 9.25 hours and costing $1,208 to $2,849. Downtown has fewer than five moves of this size of its own, so these figures come from the communities around it rather than from the neighbourhood itself. The hourly rate has not changed at this size; what has changed is how much of the home is boxed before the crew arrives.

Fewer than five moves of this size here, so these figures come from Northwest Edmonton, across 17 moves.

How much does it cost to move in Downtown Edmonton?

$741 is the median local move in Downtown, total cost with tax, across the 62 jobs invoiced as local residential work here. Half of them fell between $514 and $978. Cactus charges by the hour, so what a move costs is what it takes: the rate follows the number of movers and the size of the truck, and the agreement states it before the crew starts.

  • What does a one-bedroom apartment move cost in Downtown Edmonton?

$804 is the median for a one-bedroom move in Downtown, with half of those 36 jobs between $616 and $977. That is typically 2 movers, one truck and 4.25 hours on site, and it is 48% of the work we have completed inside the boundary. A two-bedroom runs $1,029. The cards above give the band, the crew and the trucks at each size.

  • What does a two-bedroom move cost in Downtown Edmonton?

$1,029 is the median for a two-bedroom move in Downtown, and half of the 13 we have completed here fell between $668 and $1,986, much the widest spread on the page. The median day is 5.5 hours with 2 movers and one truck, and the middle half of those jobs ran anywhere from 4.25 to 9 hours. With 13 moves behind it, treat that as a range to plan inside rather than as a quote.

  • How long does a move in Downtown Edmonton take?

4.25 hours on site is the median across the 75 residential moves recorded inside the Downtown boundary, with the middle half of them running 2.75 to 5.5 hours. The wider northwest Edmonton set sits a quarter-hour shorter, at 4 hours across 234 moves.

  • Is it cheaper to move at a certain time of year in Downtown Edmonton?

No. The hourly rate does not change by month, so no date in Downtown is priced differently from another. April, May and August have carried more completed moves here than any other month, while across the surrounding northwest Edmonton communities the busiest have been May, then July and June; that is a record of when work happened, not a price list. What moves the total is the size of the job and the hours it takes.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Downtown Edmonton?

Only where the truck has to occupy the roadway, and Edmonton's On-Street Construction and Maintenance permit is what covers that, with no fee attached at present for this class of work. A low-impact request is meant to be filed at least 6 working days ahead and a high-impact one 10, and turnaround lengthens through the peak construction season. Where the building has a loading bay, its own booking usually matters more than the street does.

Ask Edmonton in person, or price the move yourself in a minute.

Moving to Downtown, or out of it

More of the Downtown moves we have completed left the neighbourhood than arrived in it: 35 out against 31 in, with 9 running from one Downtown address to another. In a place where most homes are rented, that is a churn figure rather than a verdict: leases end, people take the next place, and the date gets set by two buildings rather than by a sale.

For the 31 arrivals the practical difference is that somebody else controls the door at the far end: a new building wants notice, the lift is booked by its management, and the loading bay comes with a window. Oliver is the neighbourhood these moves most often pair with in either direction. Whichever way yours runs, the crew, the truck and the hourly rate are the same; what changes is whose bay has to be held.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.
