Movers in Varsity: what we know about moving here

Varsity has no default kind of home. Houses, apartments and townhouses each take a serious share of the community, and it is owned and rented in something close to the same proportion. So a crew arriving at a Varsity address does not know in advance whether the day begins in a driveway or at a lobby door. Most of it was built out in the 1960s and 1970s, and households are small.

That mix shows up in the book as mid-sized work. The median local move here came to $876 against $776 across the northwest Calgary communities around it, and the median day ran 4.75 hours against 4, which is dearer and longer at the middle. Yet the middle half stops at $1,068 where the wider set reaches $1,336. Three of the four cards below rest on Varsity's own completed jobs, at one, two and three bedrooms; only the four-bedroom-plus card widens to the northwest Calgary set.

Varsity neighbourhood guide for moving day

The housing split is the thing to plan around, because Varsity holds two different moving days under one name. A little over a third of the homes are apartments, and those jobs start at a building door where the elevator and the loading zone want booking ahead of the date; the largest share is single-detached, where stairs and driveway room are the questions instead. Households are small either way, which keeps the loads moderate. If the truck has to occupy the roadway, the City issues a Street Use Permit at $31.50 a day for shorter-term use with the temporary no-parking permit included, and asks for the application at least 5 days ahead.

Varsity moving costs, by the numbers

Fifty-seven residential moves carry this band, 32 of them inside the last twelve months, and each counts because a Varsity address sat on one side of the job. Only 49 of the 57 have a price attached, which is why the cost figures name a smaller sample than the hours do. The all-time count is a floor rather than a total, while the twelve-month figure is exact.

What a move in Varsity actually looks like

Four sizes of move, cut out of 57 completed residential jobs in Varsity. Another 20 were storage runs, container loads and part-home jobs whose paperwork records no bedroom count; they belong to none of the four.

A one-bedroom apartment or condo move is the commonest single job we do in Varsity: 35% of everything completed inside the boundary, across 20 of them. Two movers, one truck, and a median of 4.25 hours on site, with half running between 2.75 and 5.5 hours. Half came to between $460 and $983. The furniture itself is quick; what fills the clock is the corridor, the lift and the distance from the door to wherever the truck could stand.

Ten two-bedroom apartment and condo moves in Varsity, 18% of the book here. Still a two-mover, one-truck day, and only a quarter of an hour longer at the median than a one-bedroom, 4.5 hours against 4.25, because a second bedroom adds boxes rather than crew. The prices sit closer together than at any other size on this page: half of the 10 fell between $662 and $1,096, against a one-bedroom's $460 to $983.

A three-bedroom move is 11% of what we have done in Varsity, 6 jobs in all, and it is where the day changes shape: three movers, one truck, and a 6.63-hour median with half running between 5.75 and 9.94 hours. Half came to between $1,096 and $1,987. Six is a small sample, so read $1,288 as the middle of a handful. At this size the garage, the basement and the storage room decide the hours as much as the bedrooms do.

This card is the northwest Calgary read on a four-bedroom-plus house or townhouse move, drawn from 62 of them rather than from Varsity alone. Three movers and one truck is the median dispatch and the median day is 6.88 hours on site, with half running between 4.88 and 9.5 hours and half costing between $984 and $2,411. Nothing about the rate changes at this size: it is hourly and stated in the agreement before the crew starts.

Fewer than five moves of this size here, so these figures come from Northwest Calgary, across 62 moves.

How much does it cost to move in Varsity?

The median local move in Varsity costs $876 with tax in, and half of the 49 priced residential jobs here fell between $488 and $1,068. That is dearer at the middle than the $776 across the northwest Calgary communities around it, and the day is longer too, 4.75 hours against 4.

  • What does a one-bedroom move in Varsity cost?

$755 is the median for a one-bedroom apartment or condo move in Varsity, with half of the 20 we have completed falling between $460 and $983. It is typically two movers, one truck and 4.25 hours on site. At 35% of everything we do here it is the commonest job in the community, which is why the card above rests on Varsity's own moves rather than on a wider read.

  • How much more does a bigger home cost to move in Varsity?

A two-bedroom runs an $887 median here and a three-bedroom $1,288, against $755 for a one-bedroom. That is the same hourly rate stretched across a longer day, from 4.25 hours to 6.63. The three-bedroom figure rests on 6 jobs, so read it as the middle of a handful. Above that the four-bedroom-plus card widens to the northwest Calgary set, where 62 such moves ran a $1,635 median.

  • Does the time of year change what a move in Varsity costs?

No. The hourly rate is the same on every date, so nothing about the calendar changes the price. What the calendar changes is volume rather than cost, and Varsity's own peak sits later than the ring's: September, August and June here, against August, July and June across northwest Calgary. Because there is also no charge for travel time within city limits, the size of the job is what decides the bill.

  • Why is the price range in Varsity narrower at the top than the rest of northwest Calgary?

Because the middle half of jobs here stops at $1,068 where the pooled northwest Calgary figure reaches $1,336, even though the Varsity median is the higher of the two at $876 against $776. The share of jobs graded large is the same in both, 9%. It is an hourly rate either way. What sits behind the difference is how many hours a job here typically runs, which is 4.75 at the median.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Varsity?

Only where the truck must occupy the roadway or hold on-street parking, and then Calgary issues a Street Use Permit with the temporary no-parking permit it requires included, at $31.50 a day for shorter-term use, with ParkPlus fees on top inside a paid parking zone. That application wants at least 5 days, which on the apartment side of Varsity is the same week the lift needs booking. There is no charge for travel time within city limits, and no deposit on a local move.

Ask Calgary in person, or price the move yourself in a minute.

Moving to Varsity, or out of it

Departures edge out arrivals in Varsity: 28 of the moves attributed to the community were people leaving it, against 23 arriving. With the community owned and rented in close to equal measure, those 28 are a mix of sales completing and leases ending: dates fixed by a closing and dates fixed by a lease, which want different amounts of notice from the building.

Another 6 ran from one Varsity address to another, which is its own kind of day: the crew never leaves the community, but both ends still have to be arranged. Whichever direction yours runs, the crew, the truck and the hourly rate are the same; what changes is which end needs the lift booked.

We used them as a labour only move - they moved everything out of our condo and into our trailer for us. They did in 2 hours what would have likely taken us 4-5 hours and it saved our backs and likely some arguments 😂. The 2 men who did the move were on time, polite, professional and hard working.

Excellent movers. Friendly, responsible, courteous, and efficient. They were way less expensive than movers who did a similar move a year previous, and the best part was they did not damage one single thing. That is a first in my experience with movers.

Figures come from Cactus’s own completed residential moves (business and high-frequency accounts excluded) and from official municipal open data; they are medians and quartiles, never averages, every published figure rests on at least five moves, percentages are rounded, and all-time counts are floors because some older pickup and drop-off addresses were never geocoded.
