Movers in University Heights: what we know about moving here

University Heights is a rented, apartment-first community on the northwest side, built out in the 1960s and 1970s and lived in mostly by one- and two-person households. That combination decides more about a move here than anything else on this page does: the date usually follows a lease rather than a possession time, the job starts at a building door instead of a driveway, and the load is a flat's worth of furniture rather than a house's.

Our own book here says the same thing in a different language. 86% of the residential moves completed inside the community boundary graded small, the median crew was two movers, and the median job ran 4.25 hours on site: a morning and a bit rather than a full day. The four cards further down split those jobs by the size of the home, and where this community has not yet produced five jobs at a given size the card widens to the northwest Calgary set and says so on its own heading.

University Heights neighbourhood guide for moving day

Two things on this list change the day. The first is that this is a community of renters in apartments, so a job here usually begins at a building door, a lift and a corridor rather than a driveway. Booking the elevator and somewhere to put the truck with the building, ahead of the date, is the most useful hour a resident can spend. Households are small enough that the load itself is rarely the problem; the carry is. The second is the kerb. Calgary issues a Street Use Permit together with the temporary no-parking permit it requires, at $31.50 a day for shorter-term work, and it wants at least 5 days' notice.

University Heights moving costs, by the numbers

Everything in this band comes from residential jobs with a pickup or a drop-off inside the University Heights boundary, counted since 2024. Read the all-time figure as a floor rather than a total, while the 10 from the last twelve months are exact. Fourteen moves is a thin sample, so the $495 to $923 band around the $742 median describes the range we have actually seen rather than a quote for any particular home.

What a move in University Heights actually looks like

Four sizes of move, cut out of 14 completed residential jobs in University Heights. Another 4 were storage runs, container loads and part-home jobs whose paperwork records no bedroom count; they belong to none of the four.

Half of the moves we have completed in University Heights have been one-bedroom jobs, and they run the way apartment work runs: two movers, one truck, a median of 5 hours on site, with half of the 7 falling between 2.75 and 5.63 hours. The furniture is a bed, a couch and a table's worth; the hours go on the corridor, the lift and the walk out to wherever the truck could legally stand. A booked elevator is what keeps a job near the bottom of that band.

This card is the northwest Calgary read on a two-bedroom apartment or condo move, drawn from 212 of them rather than from University Heights alone. It is still a two-mover, one-truck day and still a median of 5 hours on site. A second bedroom adds boxes rather than crew. What widens is the price: half of those 212 landed between $614 and $1,343, because a second bedroom can be a second person's whole household or a spare room with a desk in it.

Fewer than five moves of this size here, so these figures come from Northwest Calgary, across 212 moves.

A three-bedroom house or townhouse is where the crew goes to three movers and the day goes to a median of 7 hours. That is a full working day rather than a morning. These figures come from 161 such moves across northwest Calgary rather than from University Heights, and half of them ran between 4.75 and 8.75 hours. At this size the garage, the basement and the storage room decide the hours as much as the bedrooms do, which is why a walkthrough before the date is worth doing.

Fewer than five moves of this size here, so these figures come from Northwest Calgary, across 161 moves.

  • 6.75 hours on site half ran 4.75–9.5 hours

A four-bedroom-plus house move is the longest day on this page: 57 of them across northwest Calgary produced a $1,613 median, with half falling between $959 and $2,414. Three movers and one truck is the median dispatch, and 6.75 hours the median time on site, though half ran anywhere from 4.75 to 9.5. Nothing about the rate changes at this size. It is hourly and stated in the agreement before the crew starts, so what decides the day is how much of the house is already in boxes.

Fewer than five moves of this size here, so these figures come from Northwest Calgary, across 57 moves.

How much does it cost to move in University Heights?

The median local move in University Heights costs $742 with tax in, and half of the 14 residential jobs we have closed inside the community boundary fell between $495 and $923.

  • Is an apartment move in University Heights cheaper than a house move?

Usually, and the cards above are where you can see it: a one-bedroom move here runs a $775 median on two movers and one truck, while a three-bedroom house or townhouse at the northwest Calgary read runs $1,447 on three. The hourly rate is identical for both. What differs is how many movers the home needs and how long they are there. Most homes in University Heights are apartments, which is what pulls the community median down to $742.

  • How long does a move in University Heights take?

The median move here runs 4.25 hours on site, with half of the 14 we have completed falling between 2.56 and 5.69 hours. A one-bedroom job runs a 5-hour median across the 7 of them we have done. Because there is no charge for travel time within city limits those are billed hours of work, and stairs, a long carry and how close the truck can park are what move a job inside that band.

  • Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in University Heights?

Only if the truck needs the kerb lane or a stretch of on-street parking held for it, in which case Calgary issues a Street Use Permit with the temporary no-parking permit it requires included. It is stated at $31.50 a day for shorter-term use, with ParkPlus fees on top inside a paid parking zone. The City asks for at least 5 days' notice for lower-impact work such as a residential move, so it is a call to make the week before rather than the morning of.

  • Does it cost more to move in University Heights in the summer?

No. The hourly rate does not change with the calendar, so no date in University Heights is priced differently from another. What changes with the season is volume rather than price: across northwest Calgary, August, July and June carry the most completed moves. Because the rate is hourly and there is no charge for travel time within city limits, what a move costs is decided by the size of the job.

  • What is included in the hourly rate?

The movers and the truck at the size the job needs, at a rate the agreement states before anyone starts. The $742 median above is total cost with tax rather than a subtotal. There is no deposit on a local move and no fuel surcharge. Packing services and bin rentals are available in University Heights and are quoted on top.

Moving to University Heights, or out of it

More of the moves attributed to University Heights are arrivals than departures: 6 came into the community against 5 that left it. In a place where most homes are rented, an arrival is far more often a lease starting than a sale closing: the date is set weeks ahead by somebody else's calendar, the building wants notice, and the lift is booked by an office rather than by you.

Five ran the other way. A departure from a rented apartment is the same day in reverse: the elevator and the loading spot arranged at the leaving end rather than the arriving one, and the date still fixed by a lease. Whichever direction yours runs, the crew, the truck and the hourly rate are the same; what changes is which building has to be told.

Highly recommended! They were fast, professional, and efficient. Fit, young, strong fellas who worked well as a team. And bonus? They got the job done in half of what was estimated and I’ll be recommending them to all who ask.
