Moving isn't just about shifting boxes; it’s about transitioning your life. And nowhere is that transition more personal than your closet. We sat down with Melanie from Mello Spaces to discuss why we treat our clothes like afterthoughts during a move, and how a few professional organizing 'secrets' can ensure you don't spend your first week in your new home chained to an ironing board.
Here is her ultimate guide to packing your wardrobe with intention.
‍
1. The "Closet Audit"
Cactus Moving: From an organizer's perspective, what's the best way to mentally detach from clothes you haven't worn in years before the boxes arrive?
Melanie (Mello Spaces): Honestly, this is one of my favourite parts of the process — and something we do with almost every client at Mello Spaces before a move. It’s such a natural reset point.
I always say, don’t think of it as “getting rid of clothes,” think of it as editing your wardrobe for the life you’re moving into. A couple of easy questions I guide people through are:
- "Have I worn this in the last year?" , "Would I actually buy this again today?" That second one tends to shift things pretty quickly. Once you start focusing on what you actually wear and love, it becomes a lot easier to let go of the rest. You’re not just packing — you’re curating what deserves space in your next home.

2. Anti-Wrinkle Strategy
Cactus Moving: Beyond the standard wardrobe box, do you have a "pro-organizer" secret for packing delicate items so they can go straight from the box to the rod without needing a steamer?
Melanie: Wardrobe boxes are definitely a great starting point, but one thing we often do at Mello Spaces is pack in “outfit groupings” instead of individual pieces. So we’ll pair items together — like a top, bottom, maybe a layer — and loosely wrap them using tissue paper or even dry-cleaning bags. It keeps everything from shifting around too much.
For delicate pieces, I always try to keep them on hangers if possible. Garment bags are ideal, but even a simple trick like sliding a large garbage bag over multiple hanging items works really well.
And honestly, the biggest thing? Not overpacking. Most wrinkles come from everything being compressed too tightly. Giving clothes a bit of space makes a huge difference — and often means you can hang things up right away with little to no steaming.
‍
3. The "First Night" Kit
Cactus Moving: People often forget they need clothes the next morning! What are the 3-5 wardrobe essentials you recommend clients pack separately so they aren't digging through boxes on day one?
Melanie: This is the one that people don’t think about until it’s too late — and then it’s the first thing they wish they had done.
We always recommend clients set aside a small “first night” wardrobe bag with the basics: a comfortable outfit, sleepwear, undergarments, and something easy to throw on the next day. Sometimes I’ll suggest adding one go-to outfit as well, just so you feel a bit more put together right away.
I always say — pack it like you’re going away for a night or two. It takes five extra minutes but makes the whole move feel so much more manageable.
‍
4. Spatial Awareness
Cactus Moving: For those moving into smaller Vancouver condos, how can they use the packing process to rethink their closet layout before they even move in?
Melanie: With so many people moving into smaller spaces — especially here in Vancouver—this is where a bit of planning really pays off.
Packing is actually the perfect time to step back and look at what you have as a whole. At Mello Spaces, we’ll group everything by category as we pack — denim, outerwear, activewear — so you can clearly see your volume in each area. That alone can be really eye-opening.
If possible, I also like clients to think about their new closet in terms of zones before they even move in:
- What do you reach for daily?
- What’s seasonal?
- What can be stored a bit higher or further away?
The goal isn’t just to make everything fit — it’s to make your closet feel easy to use and aligned with your lifestyle. A move is one of the few times you get to reset your space from scratch, and when you approach it intentionally, it can completely change how your home functions day-to-day.
